The more access creative people have to GIS, the sooner...possibilities can be explored, discovered and realized.

I asked Mr. Handshake 2.0 that question on the eve of the last day of what I have dubbed the world’s first auction of GIS on eBay.

By the end of my discussion with Mr. Handshake 2.0 - a kind, skilled diplomat - I was open to passing on bidding on the GIS offered at auction by my client InteractiveGIS.

This time.

I’ve got an idea for a killer app.

This is how I’m thinking:

Business Data Algorithm, Formula and/or Idea GIS = Killer App

I appreciate that most people think “maps” when they see the “Geographic” in “Geographic Information Systems (GIS).” A lot of public sector entities such as local, state and federal governments and their agencies use GIS for various reasons, many of them map-related.

But I’m looking at the “Information” and the “Systems” parts of “Geographic Information Systems” and thinking “information” and “systems” are all business.

When I read the GIS auction item description as “Powerful Web-Based Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Interface,” I’m looking at that “Web-Based” and thinking "Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)."

Business Data Algorithm, Formula and/or Idea GIS SaaS = Killer App

I’ve heard that GIS will be offered at auction again.

Mr. Handshake 2.0, may I have a GIS? I gotta buy it for my killer app.

***

I will be candid that my seed of a killer app idea rose to a sprout from watching this video from my client InteractiveGIS. I haven’t told David Bradshaw, founder and president of InteractiveGIS, what my idea is yet. It’s still growing. But I give you fair warning. Watch this video and you may be asking tonight, “Honey, may I have a GIS?”

InteractiveGIS, a custom, Web-based Geographic Information System (GIS) solutions provider, is a client of Handshake Media, Incorporated, of which Handshake 2.0 is an enterprise.
Open Source software is used by governments, businesses in almost every industry, nonprofits, and research institutions worldwide. A complete list would be too long to print here so here are just a few examples of companies and organizations you’ve heard of that use Open Source software and participate in the community.

The State of Massachusetts declared in September, 2005, that all official government documents must be in OpenDocument format—an Open Source replacement for Microsoft Word.

The Federal Government has been slow to adopt Open Source software, but that hasn’t stopped many states from using it for internal documents and applications, including New York, Rhode Island, Michigan, Illinois, and Minnesota.

The U.S. Census Bureau uses MySQL, Linux, Apache, and PHP—all Open Source software—to manage the data from its vast surveys of the U.S. population.

NASA develops its own software and makes its source code available via Open Source. For more information about Open Source software developed by NASA, click here.

Many scientific research centers use Open Source software, including the Sanger Institute, home of the Human Genome Project.

Online news organizations that use Open Source technology include BBC News, the Christian Science Monitor, NBC, the New York Times, Reuters, SlashDot, and the Associated Press.

Open Source software is used by many well-known e-commerce companies including Google, Lycos, eBay, Craigslist, Ticketmaster, Yahoo!, Evite, Friend Finder Network, ClassMates, and CitySearch.

  			  			    	www.interactiveGIS.com
© Copyright 2010 All Rights Reserved

via interactivegis.com

Posted via web from InteractiveGIS's posterous

How Does Open Source Work?

Open Source software is developed and improved upon over time by large groups of programmers. Here's an overview of the typical path an Open Source program may take.

The big idea. A software developer has an idea for a piece of software that would solve a specific problem. He starts to write the code.

Going public. The developer uploads this code to an Open Source site where other developers can see it, download it, and take a crack at solving the same problem.

The more ideas, the better.Over time, developers interested in the project play with the code, share ideas, and modify the original software. A piece of software can be written initially to solve one problem, then be expanded to solve many others.

Finished product. When an Open Source project is considered finished, it's made available for the public to download, free of charge.

  				 Copyright 2010 All Rights Reserved

via interactivegis.com

Posted via web from InteractiveGIS's posterous

Webinar

Tomorrow we will be holding a brief webinar to introduce you to our interface.

Common Misconceptions About Open Source

Many people who aren't familiar with Open Source hold certain misconceptions about it, and some may look on it as less legitimate than commercial software. Here are a few common myths and misconceptions about Open Source software - and the truth behind them.

Myth: Open Source software isn't created by professionals.

Fact: Open Source software is written by professional programmers, many of whom work for proprietary software companies. And it's all perfectly legal, even encouraged by the companies.

There's a common misconception that Open Source programmers are pajama-wearing amateurs and students working out of dorm rooms. In fact, many programmers work on Open Source projects as part of their jobs. Many proprietary companies depend on Open Source software for part of their operations - it's very cost-effective - and have their own programmers customize the software to fit company needs. Open Source licensing agreements require these company programmers to make their modifications available to the Open Source community.

In addition, professional programmers from many different companies sometimes come together to create solutions to problems through Open Source. Apache, for example, was created by a community of professional network administrators and programmers who had a need for web server software that was reliable and affordable.

Some Open Source programmers are motivated by monetary gain. As a programmer, if you write an Open Source program, the code is available to all. But if a big company or organization wants you to modify your program for their use, you can charge them to do it. Many programmers write Open Source code and then hire themselves out to organizations for customization.

Myth: Open Source is a brand-new, untested method of software development.

Fact: Open Source has been around since the beginning of computers themselves.

It's not uncommon for Open Source to be perceived as a new, unproven Web 2.0 trend. Actually, Open Source was the default programming method as far back as the 1960's. Programmers, students and professors at places like Stanford, MIT and Berkeley all shared their coding ideas freely. Without it, computing as we know it might not exist today.

Myth: Open Source software doesn't adhere to the same standards as commercial software.

Fact: Open Source software is often held to the same stringent industry standards that commercial software companies are required to uphold.

Our core spatial engine, MapServer, is based on Open Source technology originally developed by NASA - and it's a perfect example of Open Source software following industry standards. MapServer is designed to support Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards. The OGC is an international consensus organization that designs and recommends worldwide standards for GIS data processing, data exchange, and geospatial services. Participation is voluntary, so not every commercial GIS program adheres to the standards - but ours does.

Myth: Open Source software is substandard compared to proprietary software.

Fact: Because there are so many people making improvements to the code, Open Source software packages are often more secure and robust than proprietary software. Hundreds of professional programmers critique the code, test it for flaws, and take steps to improve it. At proprietary companies, the software isn't seen and tested by so many different programmers.

There's a misconception out there that Open Source is a "fake" or "toy" version of a real, proprietary software package - and that it doesn't contain all the features and functionality that commercial software has. However, it's not uncommon for Open Source software to have more options and better functionality than commercial software simply because dozens or even hundreds of programmers modify popular Open Source programs for their own companies use, and then make those modifications available to everyone.

via interactivegis.com

Posted via web from InteractiveGIS's posterous

What if you already have GIS?

Already have a GIS?

We offer a range of applications and features not available with other commercial web-based GIS software, and we can design custom applications to suit any need and any budget. Here are just a few reasons why it's worth switching:

Significant savings. We routinely save our clients thousands of dollars the instant they give us the approval to proceed.

Frequent updates. Other GIS solutions usually update their software once a year or when there are several necessary updates. We make updates as requested, usually within hours or days.

Customization is standard. Other companies offer you a standard package, then charge for additional applications. We host your data online in a secure environment, allowing you wider access than you get with desktop or network-based GIS.

Better tools.

Maps in sizes other than 8.5x11. Our system prints engineer-grade maps in a wide range of sizes and resolution all to scale.

How InteractiveGIS Uses Open Source - And How Our Customers Benefit

At InteractiveGIS, Inc., we rely on Open Source software%u2014and we%u2019re proud of it. We use MapServer, a software application developed by NASA and released to the public under an Open Source licensing agreement, as the core spatial engine that powers our maps and databases.

Open Source software isn%u2019t just good for our company%u2014it%u2019s great for our clients. Here are just a few of the benefits Open Source software brings to the organizations we work with.

Lower cost. One of the biggest benefits of Open Source software is the difference in cost. Our use of Open Source software means we can charge significantly less than proprietary software companies do--some of our clients see savings of $25,000 or more.

Commercial GIS software companies charge thousands simply for the price of their software. Compare that to InteractiveGIS. Most of our software is Open Source and completely free of charge. In addition, many of the expensive add-ons you could pay thousands for with the commercial companies come free with us.

Simply put, we save a bundle using and modifying free Open Source software%u2014software that adheres to the same standards commercial software uses %u2014and we pass those savings on to you.

Greater flexibility. Our competitors go through an exhaustive process to make even the smallest modifications to their standard package. We can make the same changes within days%u2014sometimes within hours.

In addition, we don%u2019t charge high prices for customization%u2014in many cases, we don%u2019t charge at all. This gives our clients the flexibility to order a completely customized GIS package that suits their needs perfectly%u2014without going over-budget.

Endless innovation. We rely on the Open Source community for inspiration and programming innovation. If we can%u2019t find a solution, someone in our network of thousands of programmers around the world can. Our connections with the Open Source community allow us to back up the promise we make to our customers: if you can imagine it, we can program for it.

Compatibility. MapServer relies on MySQL, PostgreSQL, and their Open Source extensions to operate. But that doesn%u2019t mean it can%u2019t operate with proprietary formats as well. MapServer is fully compatible with popular proprietary file formats, including Shapefile. This allows our clients to migrate their data seamlessly over to our system%u2014 without losing any data.

< Other companies charge thousands for off-the shelf proprietary software. With us, you get all that at no additional cost plus an online hosting program that eliminates costly hardware and software overhead. Our clients routinely save thousands by choosing us over the competition.

More Than a One-Size-Fits-All Solution.

When most people think GIS, they think of off-the-shelf software. With these products you get a one-size-fits-all interface for a set price; extra features cost considerably more. Some add-ons can cost more than the standard software itself.

Many of the extra features and add-ons our competitors charge so much for are included in our standard package, which we sell at a fraction of the price. We offer others for a drastically reduced additional cost once you purchase InteractiveGIS, Inc..

We're also more flexible than our competitors. With them, a service upgrade can take a considerable amount of time. Compare that to our quick turnaround time: it often takes us hours or sometimes minutes to make major enhancement changes for individual clients.

Our core spatial engine, MapServer, was originally built for NASA and has been adapted for iGIS. Because we start with Open Source software, we can offer it for a tiny fraction of the cost and offer greater flexibility and adaptability to our clients.

We've Got Better Tools.

If you don't have a GIS in place, you're missing out on a wide range of tools that can make your life considerably easier. If you do, we're confident you'll find our features and customizability to be an improvement over your current system. Here are just a few of the ways we help you make the most of your data:

Nearly endless query combinations. We can customize queries to any specifications you need.

Nearly endless innovation. If you can envision it, we can design and program for it. We can even provide you with an avenue to upload tools you develop yourself!

Maps you can draw on. Our online hyper markup program allows you to digitally draw on maps, plus print out or email your markups.

Just the Facts. Our system doesn't just give you information on a single item you click on. It also provides a concise report about its relationship to surrounding features.

Intuitively designed interface. Our iGIS is easy to use no matter your experience level, you'll get up to speed quickly.

Our web-based GIS software solution is fully customized to your needs. If you never want to look at a hardcopy map again, we can make that happen. But sometimes engineers, developers, and others need hardcopies. With some commercial web-based GIS software, you can only print in one or two sizes: 8.5x11 or 11x17. Try displaying an entire water system on an 8.5x11 map; it's not pretty.

We allow you to print high-resolution, engineer-quality scaled maps in a wide range of sizes big enough and accurate enough to make crucial decisions, straight off the printer. And if you don't have a printer that can print to this size, you can connect through our system to overnight printers who can get large-scale plots in your hands the following day.

       Copyright 2008 All Rights Reserved

via interactivegis.com

Posted via web from InteractiveGIS's posterous

iGIS

What is GIS?

iGIS%u2122: Edinburg, VA - Aerial Photo

iGIS%u2122: Wythe County, Virginia - Tax Parcel Map

A map gives you spatial information. It shows you where one feature is in relation to others around it.

A database is a collection of records in a computer system. You can query for certain subsets of data, but you can%u2019t see a visual representation of how your data relates to the real world.

GIS brings the two together, combining maps and databases in a way that allows you to access information stored in your database about each feature on a map%u2014simply by clicking on that feature. It%u2019s a powerful way to store, analyze, manipulate, and display data.

Better GIS at a Better Price.

InteractiveGIS%u2122, Inc. is an industry leader in GIS technology. Originally developed for NASA, our core spatial engine, MapServer, has been adapted for use in GIS mapping and database software. With iGIS%u2122, we offer a stable, highly adaptable web-based GIS software at a fraction of the cost you%u2019ll get with our competitors.

Want a GIS? All you need to start is a PC and some data. We can provide a solution that works within your budget and with the data you have. Find out what we do better than other web-based systems on the market.

We Save You Time.

You%u2019ve got developers, the school board, and the utility department all clamoring to get information from you. If you don%u2019t have a GIS, chances are you have to spend time poring over maps to find the answers. If you already use a GIS, you%u2019ll probably download the information they%u2019re after onto a disc. It%u2019s less time-consuming than using hardcopy maps%u2014but you still have to go into the system, find the info, and burn it.

iGIS%u2122 software is entirely online, and we provide as many levels of security as you need. You can allow developers, your utility department, and your school board access to only the information they need. Simply issue a password and let each person find their own information in the system. This can take the pressure off your staff.

  				 Copyright 2008 All Rights Reserved

via interactivegis.com

Posted via web from InteractiveGIS's posterous
